The current generation of Ram HD pickups has been around for a while and if we can trust the latest reports, the 2023 Ram 3500 will come with some pretty big updates. Rumors say that this is going to be a typical mid-cycle refresh, with the new styling and few more updates. Among novelties we expect to see is a new transmission for the diesel engine, as the current model still uses a good-old 6-speed unit.
Despite the changes, we don’t believe that the overall layout will change. The overall characteristics will remain the same, which means that you may count on the same pickup that offers a fantastic balance between comfort and performance. Furthermore, this model offers one of the nicest cabins in the segment. Finally, there’s the class-leading towing capacity and a pair of two capable engine options.
We expect that the 2023 Ram 3500 will hit the market sometime in the second half of 2022.
2023 Ram 3500 Design
When it comes to base design characteristics, we don’t expect that the 2023 Ram 3500 could change too much. Of course, this model is based on the standard half-ton 1500 model, but also features few upgrades, starting from the rear suspension. It features a well-balanced setup, which ensures a high level of comfort and excellent towing and payload capabilities. Higher trim levels even come with adjustable suspension, which ensures superior ride quality.
On the other hand, we expect some styling changes for the 2023 Ram 3500. At this point, the details are yet to come, but we may presume that the focus will be on the front end. We presume we could see revisions in areas like grille, headlights, bumper etc. Naturally, updates like new color options, wheels and similar things.
Interior
On the other hand, we don’t believe that too many changes could come to the inside. Simply, the current model already features the nicest cabin in the class, characterized by nice materials and great build quality. We believe minor updates could occur only, things like new color schemes etc. Also, the offer of cab configurations and bed sizes will remain the same.
Trim Levels
Although we will certainly see novelties regarding new equipment, we have no doubt that the trim level organization will remain the same. This means that the offer will start with the well-known Tradesman, which comes with essentials only. The HFE and Big Horn will continue as the first upgrades, characterized by a few model additions. Naturally, the Laramie will continue as the most balanced version of the pickup, which offers a lot of standard features for the money. Finally, the Longhorn and Limited are trim levels where things become quite luxurious.
2023 Ram 3500 Engines
We don’t expect bigger changes under the hood. The 2023 Ram 3500 should continue with two familiar engine options, starting from a well-known 6.4-liter V8 HEMI, which features a max output of 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque.
On the other hand, the 6.7-liter inline-six from Cummins will continue in two output variants. The standard version of the engine puts out around 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. A more capable version of the engine puts out 400 horsepower and class-leading 1.075 pound-feet of torque. This version of the engine is also responsible for the class-leading numbers in terms of towing. When properly equipped, this pickup can tow up to astonishing 37.000 pounds.
Could 2023 Ram 3500 Get New Transmission?
One of the most anticipated novelties for the 2023 Ram 3500 is the transmission. Of course, we are talking about the diesel engine. This one uses a good-old 6-speed automatic gearbox from Aisin. The transmission by itself works great and it is capable of dealing with the hardest tasks with ease. However, it feels a little bit outdated compared to gearboxes in rival models, which have 10 gears. That’s why many believe the new Ram 3500 is also about to come with a new one.
Some sources suggest that could be the same 10-speed Allison transmission that’s used in rival models. Others believe that Ram will wait for Aisin to develop a new one, with more gears. The latter seems more likely to us.
On the other hand, the gasoline version will continue in the same way, with a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission, which does a fantastic job.
2023 Ram 3500 Release Date and Price
We expect that the 2023 Ram 3500 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the next year. Also, the price shouldn’t change drastically, which indicates that the base models will probably go around 38.000 dollars. Of course, Chevy Silverado 3500HD and Ford F-350 are key competitors.
