The Blue Oval Company has just redesigned its Super Duty lineup for the 2023 model year, including the entry-level F-250 model, which now seems to be a little advantage over Ram’s counterpart, because of the fact that it looks fresher, it’s more modern and has a more capable engine. However, the latest reports suggest that Ram is planning a mid-cycle refresh for the next year, so we have decided to make a quick comparison. Still, keep in mind that this 2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. 2024 Ram 2500 shootout will be based not just on facts but also on expectations from the next year’s models. In other words, take the following paragraphs with a reserve.
2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. 2024 Ram 2500 Engines
As for the engine lineup, both trucks will continue to offer gasoline and diesel versions. The F-250 currently has an advantage because it has one more powertrain option on offer. Not only that, its diesel version is now way more capable.
The company recently introduced a new base engine, a 6.8-liter V8, which replaced the old 6.2-liter unit. The optional 7.3-liter engine is still there, with respectable power figures. This engine is good for about 430 horsepower and 485 pound-feet of torque, which is notably more compared to Ram’s HEMI engine. The good-old 6.4-liter V8 puts out around 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. When it comes to transmission, Ford uses a 10-speed automatic, while RAM is equipped with an 8-speed automatic. Ford has two more gears, but Ram’s 8-speed unit still feels a little bit more refined.
As for the diesel engines, the recent redesign of the F-250 brought a significant upgrade. The good-old 6.7-liter V8 turbodiesel is now good for up to an impressive 500 horsepower and 1.200 pound-feet of torque (base versions are good for 475hp and 1.050lb-ft). The RAM 2500, on the other hand, still uses a 6.7-liter inline-six from Cummins, with a max output of 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. As you can see, the gap is pretty big but the 2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. 2024 Ram 2500 could show a notably different picture. The next year’s Ram 2500 should receive a mid-cycle refresh and one of the most anticipated novelties is the power increase. We presume the company could unlock the more capable variant of the Cummins engine, which is currently available only in the 3500 model, with 400 horsepower and 1.075 pound-feet of torque.
2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. 2024 Ram 2500 Towing Capacity
As for the towing capacity, it all depends on the engine and configuration you choose. Overall, the F-250 s currently better. With the new base engine, the 6.8-liter unit, it can tow up to 14.800 pounds. With the 7.3-liter V8, the max towing capacity goes up to 17.200 pounds. Finally, there is the diesel version, which features 18.200 pounds of standard towing capacity, and 23.000 pounds with the 5th wheel/gooseneck
The Ram 2500’s gasoline version is actually more capable than the F-250’s one, as the max towing capacity goes up to 17.790 pounds. However, the diesel version lags behind, as the max towing capacity is limited to 19.980 pounds at the moment. We presume things could notably change after the next year’s refresh.
Design and Features
As we already mentioned in this 2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. 2024 Ram 2500 comparison, Ford’s pickup has just been redesigned, so it’s not a surprise that it looks a little bit more modern from the outside. It looks more aggressive but the RAM still features a little bit better ride quality, thanks to the more advanced suspension setup. On the other hand, Ford’s pickup seems to have a little bit better brakes.
On the inside, the new F-250 looks very nice, but we still prefer Ram’s cabin, because of the exceptional quality. The materials are nicer, the sound insulation is better, as well as the overall feel of quality. On the other hand, Ford offers more advanced tech features, such as 5G connectivity, but this could easily change after the refresh.
Off-Roading
The F-250 offers the Tremor Off-Road version, with various enhancements, such as suspension upgrades, rear locker, all-terrain tires etc. On the other hand, RAM has two off-roaders in the lineup. The Rebel is already pretty impressive, with goodies like a locking rear differential, and a rear limited-slip differential. The standard equipment also includes skid plates, all-terrain tires, recovery hooks etc. The Power Wagon is even more capable, with goodies like a manual-shift transfer case, powder-coated bumpers, 17-inch beadlock-ready wheels and all-terrain tires, front and rear lockers, disconnecting sway bar, off-road suspension, electric winch and many more.
2024 Ford F-250 Super Duty vs. 2024 Ram 2500 Pricing
The current F-250 currently starts at around $45.860, while the RAM 2500 is slightly more expensive and starts at around 46.500 dollars. We don’t expect bigger changes for the next year.
