2022 Dodge Charger Daytona Concept Previews Muscle Cars of the Future

Like other carmakers, Dodge is also forced to switch from ICE cars to all-electric cars and if we look at the profile of an average Dodge driver, it turns out that lovers of models like the Charger and Challenger will probably suffer more than lovers of most other cars. The catch is in the huge engines these models have been featured in the last several decades, something that electric powertrains will hardly be able to replace.

However, it looks like Dodge has the solution for this problem. The company recently presented the 2022 Dodge Charger Daytona Concept and this vehicle comes with some pretty interesting design solutions, which should keep the level of driving excitement at the level of traditional EV cars. The concept features an exhaust, as well as multiple gears, which is something EV cars usually don’t have.

The 2022 Dodge Charger Daytona concept has brought a complete picture of the future electrified muscle car. However, the overall design was overshadowed by the aforementioned technical solutions. The first one is the exhaust system, which is absolutely not needed in an electric car. The goal of Dodge engineers is to offer an exhaust sound, the most important ingredient for every car enthusiast.

Considering that electric motors are pretty quiet, the most spectacular thing about this technical solution is that we are not talking about some fake sound that comes out from a speaker. Instead, the 2022 Dodge Charger Daytona’s exhaust produces a real sound. The air pulses are forced through pipes with baffles and chambers inside and it sounds like typical high-voltage electrical equipment. So, the pulse varies, depending on how hard you hit the throttle.

Multiple gears, why not?

The second most important ingredient for every car enthusiast is the transmission. The thing with electric cars is that their electric motors offer max power and throttle in an incredibly broad revolution range. For that reason, there is no need for more than one speed.

However, most enthusiasts agree that the lack of gears is another thing that kills the driving experience. For that reason, Dodge will install a multi-gear transmission in the future electric muscle cars. It’s still unknown how many gears the new models will have. For comparison, the outgoing ICE model comes with 8-speed automatic transmission, while classic muscle cars from the 60s and 70s usually featured 3 or 4 gears.

As we already mentioned, the new concept was pretty much overshadowed by the aforementioned technical solutions. However, it is a pretty interesting concept, which brings a pretty attractive design. We saw a two-door coupe, which closely resembles the muscle car philosophy.

We can see a combination of modern and retro design solutions. The overall shape is muscular and bulky, just like in the case of the outgoing Challenger. On the hand, the front end features a lot of rectangular shapes, including a grille and headlights, which closely resemble the iconic Charger from the 60s.

When it comes to the drivetrain, the company didn’t come up with any details. The only thing we heard was that the production version will offer performances that are at least at the same level as the current Hellcat model. To remind you, the Hellcat features a supercharged V8 with 717 horsepower and needs around 3.7 seconds to hit 60 mph.

2022 Dodge Charger Daytona Production

The current ICE generations of Charger and Challenger will end production next year. So, we expect to see all-electric successors soon after. So, after the 2022 Dodge Charger Daytona Concept, the production version may come already in 2024.
