2023 Jeep Cherokee X Review: Affordable Yet Refined Off-Roader

The 2023 model year didn’t bring any significant changes to the aging SUV, which has been around in its current form since 2014. However, the company brought the new X trim last year and that model continues in the same way, without more important changes. It remains the affordable off-road focused Cherokee, with a good portion of off-road upgrades and exclusive styling details. The 2023 Jeep Cherokee X comes with the same features and also the same powertrain offer, which includes just V6.

Some sources were suggesting the addition of the optional turbo-four but that didn’t happen. However, substantial changes might come with the 2024 model, as a full redesign has been reported. That overhaul would bring tons of changes but we are pretty sure that the Cherokee X would remain on offer.

Meanwhile, let’s take a look at the key features of the 2023 Jeep Cherokee X:

2023 Jeep Cherokee X Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2023 Jeep Cherokee X comes only a year after its introduction. It is a relatively fresh trim level, which emphasizes off-road performance while keeping the price at a reasonable level. It may not be as capable as the Trailhawk, but it is significantly cheaper and should do the job for most drivers.

Compared to the standard model, the 2023 Jeep Cherokee X continues with unique styling details, starting from the different front fascia, hood decals, “X” badges around the vehicle and similar things. Also, there is a good portion of off-road features, starting from the suspension upgrade, which includes a 1-inch higher ground clearance, along with all-terrain tires, wheel arches, tow hook and similar things. The list of standard equipment also includes LED headlights, taillights and foglights, as well as 17-inch wheels, with the aforementioned all-terrain tires. Finally, roof rails are also part of the standard equipment.

Interior

On the inside, things aren’t much different compared to standard Cherokee models. Leather upholstery is part of the standard equipment. You may also count on a familiar dashboard design, which looks decent enough, even though the current generation has been around for a long time.

The materials are OK, while the amount of passenger space is pretty generous in both rows. The second row accommodates three adults with ease, though the cargo area would use a little bit more room. It offers around 26 cubic feet behind the second row and 55 cubic feet of the total volume. That’s is below average for the segment.

Features

Other than the aforementioned exclusive features, the 2023 Jeep Cherokee X shares most of the standard features with the Latitude Lux trim level. Therefore, it comes standard with goodies like dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, heated steering wheel, keyless entry and ignition, power-adjustable front seats, 8.4-inch infotainment screen, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, household-style power outlet etc.

Also, there is a good portion of standard safety and driver-assistance features. Some of the highlights are forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert.

2023 Jeep Cherokee X Engine

Under the hood, the 2023 Jeep Cherokee X continues with a single powertrain option. It still isn’t available with the turbo-four, so the good-old V6 is still the only powertrain you can get. Of course, we are talking about a 3.2-liter V6 engine. It puts out around 271 horsepower and 239 pound-feet of torque. The engine comes coupled with a 9-speed automatic transmission, which does a relatively decent job.

Driving dynamics are OK, though they won’t blow your mind. On the other hand, off-road performance is great, due to upgraded suspension, standard four-wheel drive, different traction control modes etc.

As for the fuel economy, you may expect something around 20 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. That’s below average for the segment.

2023 Jeep Cherokee X Pricing

The 2023 Jeep Cherokee X features a starting price of around 36.500 dollars. If you’re looking for a more capable alternative, there is the Trailhawk trim, with an upgraded 4WD system, further suspension upgrades, and better tires. However, that model would cost you nearly 40.000 dollars.
