2022 Dodge Ram 2500 Might Get Allison Transmission!?

The full-size pickup truck is the no.1 segment of the American automotive industry and while this mostly refers to a half-ton pickup truck, HD iterations play an important role as well. That’s why the 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 may come with some nice updates, even though we are talking about a model that has been around for a quite short time. Simply, the competition is getting stronger every year, so constant updates are necessary.

Yearly updates are usually about new standard equipment, visual packages and similar things. However, the 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 will probably come with something more substantial. We are talking about transmission for the diesel model, which currently uses a little bit outdated gearbox. On the other side, gasoline models use a sophisticated ZF-sourced unit, so changes in this aspect definitely won’t come. Despite the potential updates, we don’t expect to see the new model much earlier, so the launch date should be scheduled for the second half of the year.

2022 Dodge Ram 2500 Could Get Allison Transmission

As we’ve just mentioned, the 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 could come with one big change. We are talking about transmission, particularly in the case of the diesel model. It looks like it could switch to Allison’s new 10-speed unit, which would definitely have a positive impact on the overall performance.

The current version uses a well-known 6-speed unit from Aisin. Although pretty durable and reliable, this transmission lags behind closest rivals, mainly in terms of speeds, as rivals use a 10-speed unit. In this case, if this pickup truck, doesn’t have much influence on towing and hauling, but we’ve noticed a less refined ride, as well as slightly lower mpg ratings.

On the other side, the gasoline model will carry on with 8-speed automatic transmission.

Other than the possible transmission change, the 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 should carry on in the same way. We are talking about a model that is still pretty fresh and more than competitive. It offers a styling the looks both elegant and rugged at the same time. More importantly, it features an advanced suspension setup, which provides impressive, class-leading ride quality. That’s definitely one of the Ram 2500’s strongest point.

For the next year, we don’t expect to see any particular change. Still, there is always a chance to see typical yearly updates, such as new color options, new visual packages and similar things.

Interior

The same thing goes for interior design. This model features by far the best-looking cabin in the class, which offers impressive build quality, fine materials and attractive aesthetics. Combined with the impressive ride quality, you get an impressive level of comfort, which becomes even higher if you pick more upscale versions, with more equipment and features.

Speaking of the features, we might see a couple of novelties for the 2022 Dodge Ram 2500. However, most of the things are about to remain the same, just like the trim level organization. The Tradesman will remain a typical workhorse, while the Big Horn will be a bit of an upgrade. The Laramie remains a mid-range option, with a good balance between price and the amount of standard equipment. Finally, there are Longhorn and Limited trim levels, which are where luxury begins.

Of course, you may count on the Power Wagon, an off-road version of this heavy-duty pickup truck, which comes with all kinds of visual and mechanical upgrades.

2022 Dodge Ram 2500 Engines

Other than the possible transmission change, things under the hood are about to remain the same. Therefore, base models will continue with a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine, which puts out around 410 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. This one comes in pair with a ZF-sourced 8-speed automatic transmission.

On the other side, the diesel version might get a new 10-speed Allison transmission, as we already mentioned. The engine, though, will carry one without changes in terms of power, so you may count on a max output of 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. Some rumors say we could see more powerful versions, which are currently reserved for the 3500 model, in the offer too.

2022 Dodge Ram 2500 Release Date and Price

Despite the possible changes, we don’t expect that the 2022 Dodge Ram 2500 will come much earlier than usual. So, we expect to see it in the last quarter of the year, with the starting price of around 36.000 dollars.

Hello, This made for some very interesting reading. I waited patiently for the 2021 Ram 2500 release date, with checkbook in hand, to see if either the 2500 had an Aisin option (I refuse to deal with their 68RFE) or the 2500/3500 had an Allison option. We all know that neither happened. So, I will wait for the 2022 to roll around and squeeze one more year out of the old 2004 Ford 6.0. One question please. When you stated “so the launch date should be scheduled for the second half of the year” are you refereeing to 2021 1/2 or 2022 1/2 model year for the possible release of the Ram/Allison marriage? You would think that with the all baby boomers retiring, many of which are sitting on large retirement accounts, that this would be a no-brainer for FCA. Thanks. Best regards! -Frank
